If the Durango switcher was waiting on one of the stub tracks, the inbound could pull in to clear the switcher, then the switcher couples up to the rear and pulls the train back out of the yard to clear the road engine to head to the turntable. Takes more effort, but it can be done.
This just requires another locomotive to be on hand, could even use the helper or an loco off the Silverton.
