RGS General Superintendent Water D. Lee. purchased the three CRR engines in the spring of 1914. By 1916 the RGS track was thought to have been improved enough to support the weight of these engines, but the heaviest of the three kept derailing on its way from Montrose to Ridgway and never even reached RGS rails. The engines were sent to the D&RG Burnham Shops in Denver to be given "substantial servicing". Author Josie Crum states that a letter dated November 16, 1916 in the D&RG files indicates the boards of the two railroads met and agreed that the three CRR engines would be purchased by the D&RG for $2500.00 each. At that meeting, the RGS agreed to purchase three ex-F&CC 4-6-0s from the D&RG for $3000.00 each, although they came to the RGS at the less than agreed upon price of $2500.00 each. This info is from Vol. XII of The RGS Story, p. 142.
Hope this answers your question, Jim.
