Quite correct, Philip -
The spike appears to be severely corroded, which accounts for the "This End Up" markings to that effect being no longer visible. IMHO, since we're already more than a week late this year, you should wait until early 2016 to send the spike to Chris (aka Euripides in the Antipodes) as a Waitangi Day present (02/06/2016).
