That is an incorrect statement.
In the Kyle years the C&TS frequently made a profit. There was a profit sharing program set up and each employee got a check after the annual accounting was done. It usually amounted to another paycheck's worth.
In the later 1980's unless we had some unforeseen large expenditure come forth, we did not use Kyle as our bank account. We had a line of credit set up through the local bank. This credit line got us through the winter (with significant work done - regular flue jobs and running gear overhauls, annual car work in Antonito) until ticket revenue started coming arriving in the spring. It usually took to sometime in August to pay off the line of credit. At that point we were in the profit mode for the remainder of the season.
The C&TS used to be a stand alone operation, that only relied on the two states for capital improvement.
