This was explored and even parts of it were graded before the project was abandoned. I think you can still see parts of the grade below Abiquiu Dam.
The idea was to avoid Cumbres Pass as the route from Antonito to Espanola and then on to Chama was pretty easy. In then end it would have added too much mileage (and extra track maintenance) to make it economical...
