I've raided the local Home Depot and garden centers, and have ground bark, decomposed granite (leveling sand), and other sand - all run thru seeves into 4 grades, all labeled. Sitting in our back room for now.

Note my layout is only just starting finish scenic work - it's been landforms & rocks for the last couple of years. Details on my blog, if you're curious:
