It is always fun to speculate. The Engineering reply: It would fit very nicely at 3%. The lower loop connection (MP 329.48 [4037+00])could be just below the East Switch of Cumbres Siding (MP 330.07 [4068+03]). At the maximum grade between Los Pinos and Cumbres being 1.42%, it would give us a grade difference of 44 feet in the 3,103' length of these points on the loop. At a 3% connecting line grade we would need about a 1466 foot long connection. This would connect into the upper line right at the east end of the tangent that runs through the crossing. Another description, in viewing east from the crossing, where the main line curves right, continue the tangent into the connection and there is plenty of room for 1500' to drop down the side of the slope.
Is it likely? NO. Is it needed? Probably not. Is it cost effective? Probably not. Just fun to see if others are interested in seeing what the old time engineers went through when they laid out Lava loop. It surely can be done, and be used.
