A railroad fan acquaintance told me about a couple of guys who visited Cuba, with the intent of touring the remaining steam railroads there. They offered the "cab" driver $150US (or thereabouts) to drive them for the day or two in the guy's old car. All went well.

During the trip, they learned that their cab driver was actually the chief surgeon at the regional hospital. His position at the hospital came with the privilege of having his own car. During his off time, he worked as a cabbie. His pay, as chief surgeon, was the equivalent of $40US. Per month...
