On the std ga East Oregon Lbr. Co line N of where I live, I came across a wooden box recessed into the swampy creek bottom next to a grade. The top of the box was about flush with the present ground, but could have extended up further. I assumed at the time it was for the same purpose to serve as a sump to syphon water. The box was full of water and could have had a pipe buried to keep it supplied from the nearby spring or creek. It would have seen it's last train about 80 years prior.
