There is a coarse screen on the end of the syphon hose. The length of the hose dictates where it can be used, often from a bridge or culvert.

The syphon is working and the initial shot of water is dumped to make sure any crud in the hose is washed out. Then the delivery pipe will be swung over the tank hatch and the tender filled.
