Casey,
Here is a photo taken of 169's ice hatch taken in Alamosa Aug 1970 by Britton Laughter. To me it appears the "plug had hinges as part of the hatch cover hinges. It also has the pull ring similar to the short reefer's plug. I do not know if the short reefers had the same arrangement.
