Your reference to the staged collision of the D&RGW # 343 remonds me of a Bob Richardson story which I think is really neat.
After the wrecked locomotive was loaded on flat cars for a one way trip to the scrap yard, a railroad employee told Bob to meet him late at night with his truck. He had taken the original decorative collars off the domes of the #343 for the #346 which was missing her parts from a long ago roll over or collision. Most likely other parts also.
So that Hollywood stunt had a silver lineing.
