We called them "Serials". Each episode was about 7-8 minutes long with about 1 minute a repeat of a portion of the last one and about 1 minute preview of the net one. They were shown every Friday and Saturday at the Lyric theater in my old home towm of Eastland, Tx.in the 1940's and early 1950's. I think there would be about 10 episodes of each serial.
The purpose was to keep you coming to the movies every week (and maybe to ward off conversion of your entertainment to that new fangeled TV). That TV by the way was quite "snowy" since we were 85 miles away from the nearest station and usually got better TV a night. But still even at night, sometimes the signal would fade in and out. Usually it seemed, right at a crucial part of the movie.
Ahhhhh, the old days!
