You might also look into the Western Maryland Scenic in Cumberland which is steam. Also 45 minutes from there is the Potomac Eagle excursion train, operated by some folks I know. They have vintage diesel power and a nice ride where you normally get to see eagles. We did a video for them in 1995, and a segment of both these railroads shows up in our first "America By Rail-The Heartland", if you have that for reference. Along with Cass you would cover the region pretty extensively.
If you are traveling that far combining these things is a good idea.
Also keep in mind the possibility of some mainline steam on the Norfolk Southern. Ex-Southern 2-8-2 4501 just operated for the first time this fall, and the Tennessee Valley RR which owns it and 2-8-0 630 have been leasing stuff to NS for excursions the last two years. Also they are restoring Norfolk and Western 611 in Spencer, NC, and they are supposedly going to run it in 2015. Look for Spring trips with 4501 perhaps in the south around Chattanooga. This might be something you can do en route to Cass or on the way back to Texas. You might as well get the most bang for the buck if the event at Cass works out to coincide with these other things. Cass is a weekend, as are most NS trips however, but I believe Western Maryland scenic might be daily by that time. Check into them.
