I too like the lighter smokebox color, as was seen in the early C&TS days, and was seen in D&RGW days too. I thought the engines really looked grimy when I was out there last September. I know we fans like the engines to look "workaday", but maybe a touch of color isn't bad either. Witness these shots I made in June of 1968 on the Rio Grande. The smokeboxes look pretty good I think.
