The summer was also productive in obtaining additional hardware components for 1008. As the NGDF has seen, we're using period-correct and functional parts that are available, and recreating several key parts. But (with one exception below) we have not really obtained authentic C&S parts, since those are just not out there.
We finally found and acquired proper 4 x 7 Master Car Builder brasses and wedges for 1008's bearings. These are smaller than the bearings used in nearly all the current narrow gauge tourist operation freight equipment. We obtained five sets (one spare in case of a hot box!)
These bearings and the brake lever parts below were gratefully obtained very reasonably from the Ashby collection. Several high-side gons of jumbled spare parts are stored outside of Canon City. Phil Johnson was very helpful in allowing us access to these. The multi-position clevises are very useful, we can get the levers extended to the needed length by splicing in additional rod length.
Also tricky to obtain (we found) are proper spring sets for the Miner draft gear. We obtained the springs and catch plates below from Bob Shank, Jr.
Most exciting was finding two period-correct C&S wheelsets among the spare parts in one of those gons containing the parts from with Ashby collection. Phil Johnson found these jewels and arranged to get them hoisted into our trailer. These actually have some life left in them. We'll have them set on a wheel lathe to refresh the bearing surface, check the axle for round, and grind out possible flat spots.
The wheel castings show "C&S" and dates of 1928 and 1935. Wow!
