When we visited Durango about 12 years ago, I was surprised how much had grown up around the railroad in the town area. It looks like the RR poked it's way through a business area, then through back yards and hugged the road. We also wandered through Durango, but the shops were just like everywhere else. Durango is like somewhere you stop on the way to somewhere else.Nothing RR related or interesting until you hit the river and the gorge.
The rest of the trip (2nd morning train) was beautiful including Silverton, and I have some great pictures and memories.
