Proper understanding and implementation of the rules and regulations regarding Locomotives entering occupied sections for the purpose of rendering assistance of stalled or brokendown trains is required at all times.
Proper protection of said stalled or brokendown train guarding against the approaching relief locomotive need to be taken.
Proper knowledge of the line you're operating over is a must.
I seemed to have had more than my fair share of relief loco work over the years, especially during the introduction of the new Electrification in the mid-80's where everyday those new Electrics were packing a sad in the software dept. I always remember the NTSB Safety reports I used to read in the 1970's in the Railways Library concerning relief loco drivers getting lost, one really nasty one on the BN.
Swore black and blue I wasn't going to be one of them.
