John:
The point I have been trying to make that some how seems to elude a number of folks here is that the 50s and 60s were not all there was to the narrow gauge. I do not disagree with most of your points. But I have seen P-51 Mustangs that were beat up, falling apart, and barely able to fly. I have also seen them restored to a fair resemblance of their glory days. I personally prefer the latter, although some seem to prefer things that are falling apart. I agree that there is a certain charm to rust, weeds, pealing paint, unreadable lettering, but that era is certianlly not the glory days of the narrow gauge.
Just because something happened does not make it right or appropriate. Adolph Hitler happened and is part of history and I have studied him and that era. But I surely would not want to bring it back. I cannot convince you or anyone that the diamond stacks on the K28s are an abomination, that is simply my opinion. I have ridden behind K28s on the Silverton with them on and I tried to take pictures where the stupid things would not show. In all honesty, they are not any worse than those abominations on them now, which I also try to avoid photographing. My favorite engines have always been the K28s and I do not have to apologize to anyone for wanting to see them the way that God and Alco intended.
