Rail weight?

January 30, 2003 04:17PM
While we are on the rail weight subject, does anyone know what size rail was used on the relocation around the Navajo Reservoir near Arboles? The only materials I have show the old line and not the relocation. I was told once by someone who rode the 1966 Silverton to Alamosa passenger special that 120# rail was used on this line. That sounds pretty fantastic to me - talk about overkill - then again, I assume the U.S. Government built and paid for this line so I suppose anything is possible. If that rail weight is anywhere close to being right, I would guess that the rail section used was actually 119# RE as 120# is not a common section. At one time, AREA did have a design for a 120# section, but it was not successful and was fairly quickly discontinued.
Anyway, just wondered if anyone knew for sure.
