Good point Doug,
There are some who want a quick ride of under half an hour, plus there are always people who show up after the train has gone out. Having a railcar ride on the old main gives those people an interesting experience so they may come back to ride the steam train. The commission may have to give a thumbs up on something like this but if there was the potential for more ticket sales they might endorse it. Tickets could be something like $5. Of course other things come into play such as available crew (volunteer or paid?) bad weather, no railcar or handcar trips in the rain, etc. and timing to be clear of yard moves and turning mainline trains.
The EBT did well for a few years having railcar rides down the old part of the mainline towards Saltillo. I saw quite a few riders on handcars and railcars on the mile of track that was cleared just for their use.
Someone has probably thought of this in the last 40 years and maybe it isn't a good idea but it may be a way to bring more people to Chama. Just sayin ...
