They are only even if you make 1472 days... Some places use locomotives hard enough to need more frequent repairs. Roaring Camp has done firebox work between mandated 1472 day tear down work... they use oil, and work the locomotives hard

The damage comes from rapid heat change, from erosion from cinders or from gasses, or from acid within the fuel...
