My opinion is the crossing there is where the toll road crossed the track. Downgrade from this spot the Wolf Creek Valley gets real steep and it would have been difficult and expensive to construct a road through there. Going up higher in the hill - like the highway eventually did - gets you above the steep narrow valley and the outcrops of Hamilton point.
