The first piece of narrow gauge freight equipment to be painted “Grande Gold” with black lettering and
silver roof to match the “Silverton’s” passenger cars was box car #3219 in early 1964. It was to be used on
the “Silverton” to carry l.c.l. and mountain climber’s and camper’s outfits. (Iron Horse News, Number 34,
April 1964). The second box car to receive the “Grande Gold” paint scheme was #3468 in the spring of
1964. (Iron Horse News, Number 35, July 1964). Issue Number 58, August 1969 has a photograph of box
car #3468 with the caption, “A new paint scheme this year on one of the two box cars assigned to the
“Silverton.” Car appears to be “Grande Gold” with black lettering and “Denver & Rio Grande Western”
across the side from end to end just below the roof line.
