"Silverton" Boxcars

January 10, 2003 07:42PM
Hey, Rick B:
I just looked at my photos from 1967, which shows two "Silverton" boxcars painted with black lettering with "flying" heralds. One of them appears to be #3468. They are both spotted across the street at the south end of the north yard, near the crossing by the depot.
Jack Douglas's excellent soft bound pictorial "The Narrow Gauge Silverton Train", published in 1972, shows both boxcars with the lettering spelled out across the length of both cars in the identical style of the coach letterboards.
I seem to recall that the two boxcars were lettered like that until the end. I'm pretty sure there were only two boxcars painted that way. I recall that these two cars were used to haul gear for campers and "Ah, Wilderness!" guests.
Woody Woodward would know. Maybe he'll jump in here.
