Still chasing down these cars. 3219 and 3468 were the two cars
painted yellow and silver for baggage service on the Durango and
Silverton with the lettering running the length of the car.
In Doris Osterwald's "Cinders and Smoke" I found a couple of photos
that seem to show a yellow car right behind the locomotive with more
traditional D&RGW lettering in black. In my 1988 copy it is the lower
photo on page 30, with the caption of: "Engine 481 with the SIlverton
Mixed on the High Line. October 15, 1981 (D. B. Osterwald). In my
1989 copy (sixth edition) the photo is on color on page 30 at the
top, credited to F.W. Osterwald this time.
Also in that edition on page 39 there is a color photo by Kenneth
Gustafson of 481 and the mixed on the high bridge below Tacoma that
has a yellow car behind the locomotive.
Does this jibe with anyone's memory and/or does anyone have a photo
of the train around 1981 that shows this car and possibly its number?
Just chasing down threads here...
