The problem with point and shoot cameras and cell phone cameras is noise. In bright sun, the shots are fine, but in low light, they get noisy real fast. This is due to the small size of the sensor and small pixel size needed to get the high pixel count.

Also, there is a noticeable time lag between pressing the shutter and getting the shot, not to mention a delay before you can take the next one. Getting rods down with a point and shoot is probably a matter of just luck.
