You know, you could still purchase that same whistle, brand new,
up to about 12-15 years ago. The price was pretty steep, but
Lunkenheimer, which became Cincinatti Brass or something like that,
still offered Plain whistles up to 6" in diameter. Many moons ago,
you could even get them up to 12" in diameter! That would take a
substantial source of steam and I think that the inlet was 3".

Shorty Maddox, now there was a real character. Ray Maddox was
an exceptional engineman, but didn't get the attention and notoriety
that Shorty did.
