Railroad Roman was just an accepted form of Lettering. UP used a Sans-Serif Gothic. Before the CB&Q takeover the C&S and its subsidiaries used a sans-serif Block lettering.
Each Railroad had it's own interpretation of Railroad Roman.
If you look at the ampersand on any railroad, you will find that very few are alike. As a matter of fact, they were not alike from shop to shop in many cases.
If you look at the numbers used, many were unusual looking. The numbers for the NYO&W and DNW&P's passenger equipment looked like no others.
