Well Rick and SP..... I did a brief search and found:
In Steve Goodman's performance from The Easter Tapes, he definitely sings "steam" and "dream" in the second verse. It also sounds as if he sings "Good morning/night "America
n" in the chorus but it's difficult to tell. Goodman also sings a slightly different tune than the one on the Arlo Guthrie and John Denver recordings.
I also found printed lyrics on several sites which have "steel" and "feel" as well as several which have "steel" and "dream".
Take your pick, but I would go with Goodman's performance as being the correct lyrics. I have an early recording of the song by him. I'll try to dig through the boxes of LPs stacked in my garage to find it and give it a listen. I think it is the first release of the song, but I'm not sure. Can't even remember the name of the album, but it also has "Lincoln Park Pirates", "Chicken Cordon Blues" and Michael Smith's "The Dutchman" on it.
I guess I've been singing the song with the wrong lyrics and tune (including my own recording of it) for all these years.
