Jerry, the poster at the top of the thread was asking about Cumbres turns specifically, as was John.
In some old film footage we have, there is a scene of a train with a mid-train helper meeting a RMRRC trip at Lobato. The freight goes right onto the trestle EB. The mid-train helpers were less frequent as most helpers were nearly always rear pushers ahead of the caboose.
In 1993 when I did some charters, we did a mid-train helper 5 cars back from the lead engine on a 15 car train. It was kinda cool, especially since we depicted a low train, somewhat like empty pipe train heading up the hill.
The one train I remember chasing in 1968 was 483 on the point and 493 pushing on the rear. Of course this was not a TURN per se, as the whole train went up in one shot, 493 uncoupled at Cumbres and headed to Alamosa ahead of the train. 493 was paced to Alamosa and that was the last D&RGW freight action I ever saw other than Durango!
