In the mid 90's I was dating a girl whose parents lived in Temple City, Ca. While having dinner one night at her folk's place she mentioned that I was a train nut, then her mom said "Oh you should take him to Chloe's dad's house. The "Chloe" she spoke of was Ward's daughter Chloe the namesake of Ward's Baldwin 0-4-2T. I asked if she knew the Kimballs and she said that she had gone to high school with Chloe Kimball and would call her to get me an invite. So the very next morning, a cold foggy winter day in So Cal. we were walking down the long driveway to the Grizzly Flats RR.
Ward came out of the house and gave us a tour of the line, the engine house, the station and his toy train collection. He was very cordial and inviting and a little quirky also! Of course I did't have a camera and this was before smart phones, but he did send me and my gal a quick note on the GFRR stationery. A few months later, she and I split up and she kept the letter! Oh well it was a great day and he was a great man. I am proud to say I shook his hand.
