All of the K-27 built as compounds they were converted from compound to slide valves. Most were later converted to piston valves and superheat. The ones with inboard valves like 454 and 461 were set up with stephenson valve gear when they got piston valves. and later converted to Walschaerts gear. The ones with outboard valve chests like 463 and 464 got Walschaerts gear when they got piston valves.
