It is starting to come back to me. This was the number of bolts that we torched. I had an easier time since I was rather thin and could drop down inside the dome and torch away on both ends of the bolt without nicking the sheets. This was during the first attempt a replacing the side and crown sheets.
As far as going back together, we did install new sheets the way our insurance inspector wanted us to. We also ran in all of the new bolts, and headded over a lot of them. If I remember, the bolts down low only took about half an hour to thread the sheets and run the bolt in. Took much longer up on the crown.
Lots of fun. Never want to do it again. Not to long after that I became a relief foreman on the Rio Grande (SP) and had no time to volenteer.
To bad that 318 turned into such a heart breaking basket case. It was a much easier engine to run and fire than the 346, and 346 is a good one.
