I read somewhere they set out 14 empties and picked up 14 loads. They set the cars out to reduce tonnage, but still had more tonnage than they left Durango with. The crew must have figured with the snotty weed covered rail, there was no way they were going to get the whole thing up through Monero Canon. The empties never left Chama. The next day 484 and 498 took the 14 loads of lumber up the hill and on to Alamosa. As Mike mentioned, the empties were along just to get them out of the way in Durango. when the new loop was put in, the DGO Yard lost significant space, plus it was all going to be torn up anyway. It's harder to tear up track when cars are sitting on it. The cars left in Gato stayed there until the scrappers came by and cut everything up.
