All of this discussion makes me wonder what those of us who are "armchair" railroaders would do if we were in the position of having to do this day after day after day, no matter what the weather.
Even today's railroaders with heated and air conditioned cabs don't have to face this day after day.
Rain, snow, sleet, freezing temps, and on the other side, summer heat, cabs already hot as ovens, and doing this day or night, no matter what.
These guys are/were tough and dedicated.
