It probably doesn't help much, but you might do some research on orthochromatic and panchromatic film and which was likely to be used at your photo date. And how they represent yellow and gray.

I "think" orthochromatic will make yellow nearly black while gray would be gray. With panchromatic, I "think" both yellow and gray would be gray.

So, if it was likely to be orthochromatic film, the color was probably gray. If panchromatic, it could be either.
