The early morning in cold weather is always a treat. I agree these are moody but most still guys want that perfect lighting. In your case you might as well shoot them anyway(no film costs these days) until the sun gets higher.
These scenarios are also nice for video, even if the light is not perfect. Sometimes the video is more forgiving, and you do have the element of movement and sound which helps you "Feel" that cold morning steam experience.
