Here is a George Beam Photo from about 1922.
Reguarding sizes of lettering, these photos of 04426 which I took in 1968 may help. Note that the added W is slightly larger than the older D&RG. This is also shown in the Photo Jeff posted of the wreck in Durango.
Also this one of 04444, again from 1968.
The 1924 re-building was realy building totaly new cars.
