Jimmy I got to thinking about Runyon. I presume he and the fireman rode the caboose but being enginemen if one of them wanted to ride the cab would the Engineer of the 496 allow or diallow that? Or, since they are bith the same level a mute point? I know when folks work the same position it makes it hard to do your job with a co-worker looking over your shoulder.

For the most part I believe the requirement was to ride the caboose. A rule read "No persons, except employes in discharge of their duties....will be permitted to ride on a locomotive....without proper authority." Deadheads, even though they were on duty, were not in a working capacity.
Exceptions would occur, of course. Such as light engines, etc.
