It is interesting to see that Frank Crawley got a turn as engineer out of Durango. He was No.54 in seniority in 1940, so far down the list that he told the 1940 census taker that he was a farmer. He did make $850 in 1939 from somewhere in 1939.
Crawley started as a fireman on 10-16-1916 and was promoted to engineer on 10-2-1923. He was between Bill Squires and Charles Firm on the 1940 seniority list. More senior men like Squires and Roy Buchannan were taking jobs out of Alamosa. Sounds like the crew caller had to hunt to find someone to run the 484.
Tilling the soil must have brought in more income as Crawley was gone by 1945.
