A long standing joke was when the RGS was controlled by the D&RGW's 3rd division, they converted the RGS from a "north-south" RR to an "east-west" RR. Everything headed away from Denver was "west". So trains leaving Ridgway headed West. Which was fine until they reached Dolores and turned from heading southwest to southeast (by compas direction). By the time they left Mancos the westbound train was headed eastward by compas, which had to confuse a lot of people.
A train departing Durango facing south the could be heading either east to Chama, east to Dolores or west to Farmington. Run it around the loop and it could run west to Silverton too.
