Engineer Oscar Caldwell must have been going for the money when he chose freight over narrow gauge passenger trains when the San Juan bid came up. He made $3,333 in 1939.
San Juan engineer Charles Boyd made $2,400 in 48 weeks work in 1939. Engineer George Ray's wages could not be found.
Chili Line engineer Alexander H. Baskett made $3,000 while Charles L. Arnell made $2,300. Arnell did not work an entire year but his weeks worked was scratched over.
Durango San Juan engineer George Densmore made $2,400 for 42 weeks work while fellow hogger Owen House made $1,800 in 48 weeks' work. Densmore may have worked more freight and work train big jobs to account for the higher pay.
The highest wages in passenger train or mixed train service was earned by standard guage engineer Emmitt J. Freeman, who made $4,000 running trains 115-116 between Alamosa and LaVeta.
Alamosa enginehouse foreman Anthony Smith made $3,268.
Railroad jobs paid well. Alamosa County Clerk Charles M. Van Fleet made only $1,800 and he had to run for office. Engineer W.I. (William Isaac) Marsh's adopted daughter Edna Murray-Marsh earned $117 as an usherette at the Rialto Theater.
