Baldwin used a class number to indicate the wheel arrangement, cylinder size, design drawing and then sequence number. This like a serial number and lists are reported to exist that match these with the more common used "construction number" that appeared on the builder's plate.

The class number was stamped on many parts on the locomotive. I've seen it on running gear parts and even on a tender tank.
