I asked a friend on another list, and continent and got this reply:
'Le Chatelier'....Francais.
Used here on the Abt system, now running again, at Strahan, Tasmania.
Look for thr two brass 'stacks' each side of the funnel...they're the water brake's exhaust's.
(Part 1's allmost all diesel rubbish)
Part 2
and
Part 3
Used in Chile, Peru, Oz, US, Switzerland, France (obviously), &c......
(after additional questioning)
The water brake is controlled by a globe valve off the boiler, admitting from beneath boiler water level, and opened until water (droplets) are visible at the two brass stacks next to the main stack. Then the water is cut back until the droplets *almost* disappear. All of the water braking is done whilst the engine is in reverse gear for the direction of travel. The two brass stacks, in effect, become the blast pipe during braking, as the 'normal' blast pipe is shut off during water braking.
