484 has had her "smiley face" patch for a long time. As mentioned, the soot and cinders accumulate in the front of the smokebox below the table plate, which rots out the smokebox door. The table plate - on which the cyclone sits - is supposed to seal against the smokebox front, but I've neverseen one that did, so soot and cinders work down between the edge of the table plate and the smokebox front and fill up the bottom of the smokebox. All the 480's that I have seen opened up have a patch on the inside of the door. The exterior patches vary from engine to engine.
