Steve:
That Hero camera on your helmet gives quite a view! Its interesting wide angle view distorts a little bit but not badly. Made the tunnel parking lot by the toilet house look a little narrow.
I realize that you were part of a group so stopping and looking had to be a group thing. People on this Forum who haven't been over the Alpine Tunnel ROW along the Palisades probably did not fully realize where you were. Some quick looks over the edge with your helmet camera, after a quick stop, would have helped to orient people.
For viewers who have seen the videos, particularly the second one: where Steve turned around at the gate on the upper end of the parking lot is as close as the public can drive to the Tunnel. It's about a quarter mile or so walk up the grade to the site of the engine house, etc., and a further walk of about 400 yards or so to the West Portal.
BTW, Steve, right where the Williams Pass road meets the grade to the Tunnel (where you stopped and waited for the ATVs behind you), we were headed downhill in August 2011 and saw a couple, on what I think was a Moog, coming down that Williams Pass Road at that same point. I stopped there and waited for them to pull out in front of me and head down the grade. Talked to them briefly. I knew my FJ Cruiser might block them and give them a face-full of dust if I went first. Besides, I had some photos to take and my son and his family were behind me!
Thanks for posting those two videos!
Best regards, Hart Corbett
