my dad and I camped at the junction creek CG outside and to the west of Durango. Head north on Main street and look for the sign near the fairgrounds. There's a liquor store on the corner (called junction creek liquors).

For Chama, there's a good campground up at the top of cumbres pass.

both are national forest and very inexpensive. Both also have water and vault potties.
