When was the last time a wheel lathe came up as surplus? In additionm to the lathe, you need about a 20' square area to set it up, an overhead crane to pick up the wheels, etc. etc.

My comment is for the small amount of wheel work a typical RR does, a wheel lathe is not a necessity, when there are those with them who sell thier services to others. They do so because they are under utilizing thier own wheel lathes.
