I am really suprised that there hasn't been a private company open up in central Colorado, with all the demands that are out for machining and rebuilding of locomotives. I have seen many posts on here of engines and tires, etc., going to Durango to be machined and quartered for other tourist museum railroads. Why is it that someone doesn't open up a shop in Alamosa or on the outskirts to do these kinds of fixes. It would be cheaper than shipping things to Durango via a Semi. Especially when there are tracks that are close to the C&TS. There are many talented machinist out there that are looking for creative jobs.
I'm not trying to bash the D&SNG they have done much for preserving history too, I was a big fan at the time they restored 482 back to service. In fact I probably bought 10 or 15 copies of the "Rebirth of a Locomotive" "482" to share with other machining friends for christmas the year Bill Fries(aka, C.W. McCall) + D&SNG released their video.
There definatly is demand out there and like the C&TS they are getting political help, though it takes much sweat, blood and tears. Grants could be easier to get if there were lower costs for transportion, and insurance for distances shipped. Sorry if this sounds like soap-box dance. Just suprised that there isn't more sub-contractors out there willing to do this kind of work.
